Dear colleagues,

It is our pleasure to invite you to the 3rd Coatings and Interfaces Conference (CIC2021). Following the two very successful electronic editions of this conference series, we are pleased to announce that CIC2021 will hold its 3rd edition virtually, allowing attendees to actively engage in discussions about the latest findings in the field. The event will take place on 24–26 November 2021.

The impact of coatings and interfaces in technology is growing at an unprecedented pace. Energy, sustainable mobility, pollution control, critical raw materials, preservation of cultural heritage, control of materials degradation, food safety, and health science are all challenges that critically depend on our capability to engineer surfaces. The aim of the CIC2021 is to give scientists and professionals a unique opportunity to keep up with this quickly evolving field, by providing a comprehensive overview of the latest findings regarding the fundamentals and application of coatings and interfaces.

CIC2021 will bring together scientists and technologists from academia and industry, encouraging the involvement of excellent early-stage investigators. Participants will have the opportunity to share their most recent findings with a focus on the following areas of Coatings and Interface Science and Technology:

  • Coatings for mitigation of corrosion, wear, and erosion;
  • Bioactive coatings, surfaces, and interfaces;
  • Advances in coating deposition and surface functionalization;
  • Coatings for food packaging and preservation;
  • Coatings and interfaces in cultural heritage preservation and restoration.

A Coatings Special Issue dedicated to the conference will be open to the submission of selected outstanding contributions.

Instructions for Authors

Submission

Submissions should be made by authors online by registering with www.sciforum.net, and using the "New Submission" function once logged into the system.

  1. Scholars interested in participating in the conference can submit their abstract (about 200–300 words) online on this website until 1 September 2021.
  2. The Conference Committee will notify the acceptance of the abstract by 15 September 2021.
  3. In case of acceptance, authors will be asked to submit a poster (in PDF) until the submission deadline on 13 October 2021. In addition, each accepted abstract will have the opportunity to be selected for a Flash Poster Presentation in a live online session. You will be notified about the selection by 3 November 2021.
  4. The posters will be available on cic2021.sciforum.net for discussion and rating during the time of the conference from 24-26 November 2021.
  5. After the conference, the Scientific Committee will select abstracts for which extended papers may be included for publication in a Special Issue of the open access journal Coatings with a 20% discount on the Article Processing Charges (APC). Extended paper submissions will undergo the usual process of the journal, including peer-review.

Posters

Posters will be available on this conference website during and after the event. Participants will be able to check each poster and post comments and questions during the entire conference. Please submit your Poster along with a copy of your accepted abstract before 13 October 2021, following the poster instructions: 1) The poster should be in PDF format 2) The content of the poster should be a comprehensive presentation of your accepted submission. 3) No copyright issues with any elements in the poster.

Dr. Alessandro Lavacchi is the Editor-in-Chief of Coatings, an international open access journal devoted to the materials science and applications of deposited materials. Dr. Lavacchi is a Research Scientist at the Italian National Research Council (ICCOM-CNR), where he also is the Head of the Electron Microscopy Facility. Dr. Lavacchi’s research focuses on electrochemistry and materials science with a special emphasis on energy-related surfaces and coatings science and engineering. He has co-authored more than 80 papers in leading international journals, as well as the monograph “Nanotechnology in Electrocatalysis for Energy,” edited by Springer.

Professor Massimo Innocenti is the Associate Editor of journal Coatings. His research activity is focused on nanomaterials obtainable by electrochemical processes, which are used in the field of electrocatalysis, energy and sensors. From 2013–2015 he was the elected member of the Executive Council of the interdivisional group Chemistry for Renewable Energy (EnerChem). In January 2016 he was re-elected as a member of the Executive Council of the interdivisional group Chemistry for Renewable Energy (EnerChem) for 2016–2018. From 2013–2016, he was an ESRF Review Committee member at the Synchrotron of Grenoble. From 2014–2015 he was the Guest Editor of the Special Issue "Metal Nanocatalysts in Green Synthesis and Energy Applications" for the journal Molecules. He has taken part in various research projects at the Synchotron of Grenoble and Trieste. Prof. Dr. Innocenti is a member of SCI (Italian Society of Chemistry). He has undertaken notable international collaborations with the universities of Ulm (Germany), Athens (Georgia, USA), S. Carlos (Brazil), and Krakow (Poland).

Eduardo Guzmán is currently Associate Professor at the Physico-Chemistry Department and Researcher at the Multi-disciplinary Institute in the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain). He received his MSc in Chemistry and in Science and Technology of Colloids and Interfaces, and his PhD in Science (2009) at the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain). After his PhD, he worked for a period of four years at the Istituto per l’Energetica e le Interfasi in Genoa (Italy), after which he returned to his alma mater in 2014. He has published more than 85 papers in JCR journals and 10 chapters in books (https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4682-2734), corresponding to a H-index of 28, and he has co-authored more than 100 contributions to different national and international conferences. His main research interests are LbL assembly, interfacial rheology, drug delivery, biophysics, cosmetics, and pest control. He has supervised 3 PhD students, 10 MSc students, and more than 20 undergraduate students. He has been involved in 2 EU and 6 Spanish funded I+D grants, and has had scientific responsibility on 4 cooperation projects between academia and industry. He is a member of the editorial board of numerous scientific journals, including Coatings (Editor-in-Chief of the Section “Liquid–Fluid Interfaces”), Polymers, Current Cosmetic Science and Advances in Colloid and Interface Science and has been guest editor of different Special Issues in Coatings, Processes, Polymers and Advances in Colloid and Interface Science

His scientific skills concern the elaboration and the physic-chemical and structural characterizations of Biomaterials (prosthetic coatings and bone substitutes). The developed techniques are Electrodeposition (ELD) and Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) for the elaboration and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) for the characterization. He is the Manager of Research Project « UTIQUE 2020 » (2020-2024). He was the Scientific Project Leader of sevral projects : « NANOTRIBO » (2013-2017) - « NANOSURF » (2007-2012) - EGIDE IMHOTEP (2011-2012) - EGIDE Ireland (2006)- Industrial partnership with the start-up "Natural Implant" (2002-2003). He is a Scientific expert for the French Agency for Research (ANR) and he was a member of the organizing committee of international conferences: NANOSMAT (October 2010) and BIOCERAMICS29 (October 2017) From 2019–2020 he was Guest Editor of the Special Issue "Surface Coatings for Biomedicine and Bioengineering" for the journal Coatings. And from 2021–2022 he is Guest Editor of the Special Issue "Bioactive Coatings and Biointerfaces" for the journal Coatings. He is an Editorial board member of Journal of Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering. He is currently involved in the preparation and experimental characterization of biomaterials to be employed in orthopaedics, dentistry, bone tissue repair and regeneration. In particular, he is working on production and characterization of bioceramic scaffolds; bio and functional coatings; development of new bioactive glass compositions by melting or sol-gel; bioactive glass-based composites for the production of dense sintered bodies and porous scaffolds; computational simulations of microscale material phenomena; surface characterization and analysis; production and characterization of ceramic composite materials. The results of his research activity have been presented in several national and international conferences. He is author of more than 90 publications in national and international papers.

Cecilia Bartuli is Professor of Materials Science and Technology at Sapienza University of Rome. Her research activity is focused on surface engineering, with special reference to thermal sprayed and electroless metallic, ceramic and cermet coatings for corrosion and wear protection, thermal protection systems and thermal barrier coatings and diagnostic tools for corrosion monitoring of metals of interest in Culturage Heritage. She is member of the board and directive committee of INSTM – National Interuniversity Consortium for Materials Science & Technology and Director of CISTeC -Research Center in Science & Technique for the Conservation of Historical and Architectural Heritage of Sapienza University. In 2019 Professor Cecilia Bartuli was the Guest Editor of the Special Issue "Thermal Spraying of Metallic Coatings" for the journal Metals MDPI and she is presently a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal Coatings MDPI. She is a member of AIMAT, the Italian Association of Materials Engineering, and since 2000 she has served as an expert for research evaluation for several national and international research programs.
